BHARTHAM Showing at the Fringe this August

Experience a mystical journey through the rhythms of dance in our show “Bhartham”, following the unique Kalakshetra style of ‘Bharatanatyam’. Witness this stunning performance by Pranitha Kamat in the European Premiere at Edinburgh Fringe Festival August 2006.

Bharatanatyam, indigenous to southern India, is one of the country’s oldest dance forms. The name Bharatanatyam is a combination of four Sanskrit words, BHAva (expression) + RAga (music) + TAla(rhythm) + NATYAM(dance) named after the 6th-century scholar Bharata who wrote the first Indian treatise on dance and drama. Bharatanatyam, originally a recipient of Royal Patronage is today an immensely popular form of cultural expression and source of pride among the Indian Diaspora. Many South Indian temples contain sculptures engraved with figures posed in positions typical of Bharatanatyam

Our show portrays all the important aspects of Bharatanatyam, where you can witness the amalgamation of Abhinaya (dramatic art of story telling), Nritta (rhythmic body movements) and Nritya (combination of Abhinaya and Nritta).

During this performance the dancer significantly focuses on a mastery of abstract hand gestures and movements and a complex system of body language to depict emotional expressions of episodes portraying Hindu mythology. Some of the episodes covered in this show are Shri Krishna Leelas, Chapters from Mahabharatam, wedding of Shanmukha with Valli and so on. Bhartham brings in a spiritual realisation to the audience through its graceful, aesthetic and statuesque poses.

Pranitha Kamat has studied Bharatanatyam for over 18 years and is an instructor at the Pranitya School of Dance. She holds a diploma in Bharatanatyam and also aspires to pursue Masters in fine arts. She is contemplating her prowess to encourage youngsters in becoming classical dancers.
